Comparative Primate

Environment/Overview

There are about 5 species of lemurs but because of changes has caused some to go extinct. Lemurs are native to the island of Madagascar and the neighboring island Comoro. Madagascar is divided into two parts, each with their own distinct climate. Focusing on the ring-tailed lemur’s native to the south of Madagascar in the dry forest and bush. The ring-tailed lemur has brown and gray fur a tail with black and white rings. Even though the lemurs are capable of climbing they spend a great deal of their time on the ground. When on land they use ways to communicate and stay together by leaving a scent and holding their tails up in the air. The spider monkey lives in tropical rain forest of Central and South America, spending most of in the air and hanging from braches. They have long flimsy arms and a tails that allows them move from branch to branch, tree to tree. There are about 5 different species of baboons living in Africa and Arabia. These are some of the world’s largest monkeys. Because they do not have a gripping tail they spend most of their time on ground but, do climb trees to eat, sleep, and look out for trouble. The Gibbon live in South Asia, because of their strong hook-shaped hands they are able to grip branches. They have oversized arms and long powerful legs for propelling; and shoulder joints that allow for greater range of motion, so they a very rarely on the ground.Chimpanzees walk on all fours some time up straight live in African rain forests, woodlands, and grasslands.

Male vs. Female

Both the male and female lemurs are the same size about 1.4ft tall and weighing 5 pounds; at birth weighing less than 3 ounces. The females (adult) are dominant over the males. Females tend to stay with their groups will the males roam to other groups. There are high ranking males about 6 to 9 years old in each social group but they only have rank over the younger male lemurs not the females. The environment as a lot to do with the reproduction of the lemurs. In a good year the maturity and birthrate and survival are better because of the access to resources. The female spider monkey 42 to 57 centimeters long and the tail 75 to 92 centimeters long, weighing 6 to 8 kilograms; while the male is 38 to 48 centimeters long and the tail 63 to 82 centimeters long, weighting 9 to 10 kilograms. When the female gives birth they spend the 1st year of the baby’s life taking care of it. For the 1st few weeks caring them in front and then on their backs. The male and female baboon’s average from 33 to 82 pounds, the body is 20 to 40 inches not including tails. Male baboon are very jealous when it comes to their female; is their female wonders too far the male tends to grab and bit them. Gibbons travel in families (male, female, and children) and use sounds to warn of others. Because of the different species they range from 9 to 29 pounds. Female chimpanzees give birth any time of year but not until the age of 13 and males are not considered adults until 16. They are between 4 and 5.5ft tall and weigh 70 to 130 pounds.

Diet

The lemur because of it environment eat thing such as fruits and leave and such things having to adapt do to the time of year. They also have to find different way to get water; using their claws they are able to get water from pears, trees, and cactuses. The spider monkey because of their environment feast on fruits. Baboon eat pretty much what they can get their hand on. Some examples being fruit, crops, seeds, meat such as birds, rodents and some larger animal like antelope and sheep. Gibbons because of their good environment they eat mostly fruit sometimes eating leaves and insects. Chimpanzees are fruit and plant eaters, but they also consume insects, eggs, and meat.

Summary

Each of the monkey listed above are very similar but because of their different environment some are able to do more than the others. Some spend most of their time on ground because of the lack of something or because of environment they have to look for food. While others because they are so well equipped and have a great environment spend the majority of time in the trees.

  1. Make sure you email me if you have any questions on posts.

Okay on your environmental overviews, but that section should have focused on the environment, not on the specific traits of the species.

Your topic was sociality and mating patterns. You to focus on the latter, without addressing the general social patterns of the primates (solitary, family units, troops, etc.). Your descriptions of mating patterns was quite good and did a clear job of trying to describe how the environment influences reproductive success through these mating patterns.

I'm not sure why you include diet in this discussion. The third section was meant for you to explain the connection between your assigned trait (sociality and mating) and the environment. For example, you can explain social groupings by how they help a primate deal with predation or competition for resources (through territoriality). You can also explain how different mating patterns help increase reproductive success by guaranteeing mate access or increasing access to possible mates or even attracting mates more successfully all factors in competition for mates.

Summary is included, but without the third discussion relating trait to environment, it was difficult for you to draw conclusions on that relationship.
